Springfield College Finishes In Top 5% Of Division III Athletic Programs In The 2017-18 Division III Learfield Directors' Cup

Springfield, Mass. – May 31, 2018 – Springfield College Athletics finished 22nd nationally in the final overall standings of the 2017-2018 Division III Learfield Directors' Cup. Springfield's finish marked the the third time in the last seven seasons that the Pride finished ranked in the top 25 and in the top 5% of the 450 Division III athletic programs in the country.

For the 2017-18 year, the Learfield Directors' Cup scoring was updated for the first time in recent history. While there is still a maximum 18 sports counted, men's and women's basketball and women's and women's soccer, are the four sports that must be counted for each institution. Additionally, up to 14 other scores may be counted, regardless of gender, in the final score.

It was another successful year for Springfield College Athletics, which was highlighted by some remarkable performances on the national stage.  The men's volleyball team captured its fifth NCAA Division III National Championship in the past seven years, while the men's basketball team made a historic run to the NCAA Division III Championship Final Four.  Additionally, the men's soccer, women's lacrosse, and men's lacrosse programs all reached the second round of the NCAA national tournament.  Individually, the Pride had several outstanding showings, highlighted by Jack Pinho (Prospect, Conn.) racing to two fourth-place finishes in the indoor mile and outdoor 1,500 at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, and Connor Pennington (Monson, Mass.) producing a pair of top-eight performances in the diving events at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. 

The Pride recorded 525 points throughout the year, 229 of which came in the spring season. The Pride totaled 75 points in the fall and registered 221 points during the winter.  Springfield received points from six teams that went to the NCAA Championships, including the football, men's soccer, men's basketball, men's volleyball, men's lacrosse, and women's lacrosse teams, while individuals from the women's swimming and diving, men's swimming and diving, men's track and field, and women's track and field scored points for the Pride at their respective NCAA Championships.

Williams once again claimed the Learfield Directors' Cup title and earned the title of top-ranked Division III athletic program for the 21st time.  Including Springfield, seven schools from New England were ranked in the top 25 in the country, including fellow New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) institution MIT (2nd), as well as Middlebury (5th), Tufts (8th), Amherst (9th), and Wesleyan (23rd).
