Auburndale, Fla. - March 16, 2017 - Despite three hits for transfer sophomore Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.) and two RBI apiece for Mark Joao (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) and Logan Barrett (Petersham, Mass.), the Springfield College baseball team fell to UMass Dartmouth, 5-4, on Thursday morning at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
With the loss, Springfield College is now 2-3 on the year, while the Corsairs improve to 3-4 overall.
Junior pitcher Joe Gamache (Lebanon, Conn.) took the bump first for the Pride, as he pitched 6.0 innings, giving up just four hits while also striking out four batters. Freshman Nick Naples (Berlin, Conn.) came on for the final three innings, picking up his first-collegiate strikeout.
The Corsairs were led by junior catcher Jack Hamilton (Barnstable, Mass.) as he went 2-for-4 at the plate, picked up three RBI and jacked a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning. UMass Dartmouth used five pitchers throughout the contest, as Robbie Carrillo (Melrose, Mass.) earned the win.
After a scoreless first and second inning, the Corsairs broke through in the top of the third on a two-run double for Hamilton, before a sacrifice fly from Erick Ramirez (Boston, Mass.) drove in the junior to make it 3-0, UMass Dartmouth.
The Pride answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame, as Joao singled to center with the bases loaded, scoring Alex Denoyelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Colin King (Berlin, Conn.), before Barrett double to right, scoring Joao and Russo to make it 4-3, Springfield College, after three.
Harrington's solo shot in the top of the fifth inning evened the game at four apiece, a score that would stand until the ninth inning, where Ezequiel Sanchez (Mantai, Puerto Rico) drove in Ryan Ainslie (Weymouth, Mass.) for the game-winning run.
Up next, Springfield College will play a doubleheader with Colby Sawyer on Friday, March 17 at 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. back at Lake Myrtle.
