Rivalry Renewed
From their days in the Empire 8, Springfield College and St. John Fisher had some especially memorable meetings.

  • In 2006, in a battle between two undefeated teams, visiting Springfield College defeated host St. John Fisher College, 55-38.  Springfield was ranked 15th in the nation at the time, while the Cardinals were ranked ninth. The game featured no punts and a combined 1,041 yards of total offense (Springfield 534, Fisher 507), while Springfield quarterback Chris Sharpe scored a school-record seven rushing touchdowns (one shy of the Division III record) and finished the game with a Springfield-record 280 yards on just 26 carries (10.8 yard average).
  • Later that year on November 25, St. John Fisher College football picked up a 27-21 victory over Springfield College in a second round NCAA Division III East Region playoff game.  Meeting in the postseason after finishing the regular season as Empire 8 Co-Champions, Sharpe tied an NCAA Division III record – Most TD's Rushing in a Single Season – with 35 for the year and also set an NCAA Division III record for most carries by a QB in a single season with 261.  He also broke the NCAA Division III record for most rushing yards by a QB in a season and finished with 1,941 rushing yards on the season.
  • In 2010, then-freshman quarterback Austin Bateman ran for 237 yards and three touchdowns, and threw for one more TD in leading Springfield College to a 55-49 Empire 8 victory at St. John Fisher.  The a game that saw both teams combine for 1,009 yards of total offense (Fisher 533, Springfield 496), Springfield's ground game proved to be too much for Fisher. Springfield, which didn't punt once in the game, ran the ball 88 times, gaining 429 yards and held the ball for nearly 39 minutes.  Bateman led the Pride, rushing 37 times for 237 yards and three touchdowns.

At the Helm…
Head Coach Mike Cerasuolo is entering his first season at the helm for Springfield. After 15 seasons as the offensive coordinator, the former two-time Division II All-New England offensive lineman standout at Springfield became the 14th football coach in the history of the program that dates back to 1890, and is just the fifth coach the program has had in the past 70 years.

About the Cardinals…
St. John Fisher College broke into the top 25 of this week's D3football.com national poll and jumped seven spots to No. 24 in the national poll for the week ending September 4, 2016. Voters took note of Fisher's 52-10 win over Olivet College on Saturday.  Last year, both Fisher and Olivet were crowned conference champions.  Olivet went 9-1 last fall, with their lone loss coming to Albion College, who won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) after posting a perfect 10-0 record during the regular season. Fisher was crowned the Empire 8 Conference co-champions with SUNY Cortland.  Fisher gained 500 yards of total offense for the first time since 2014, while the defense kept the Comets off the scoreboard for the first 36 minutes of the game on Saturday.
