Springfield, Mass. - November 8, 2016 - In a matchup of two of the premiere rushing offenses in all of college football, the Springfield College football team will travel to Merchant Marine to play their last regular season game on Saturday, November 12, at 2:00 p.m.
Last Time Out...
Thanks to 24 unanswered points and five forced turnovers, the Springfield College football team toppled RPI, 24-7, in their last home game of the season.
Jake Eglintine (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) totaled 132 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns, while Dominic Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) produced a game-high 12 stops in the victory. The win boosted the Pride's overall record to 5-4, and 4-2 in Liberty League play.
Trailing 7-0 at the half, Eglintine busted out a 56-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and put Springfield ahead for good with a 44 yard TD early in the fourth quarter. The Pride added insurance points thanks to a 34-yard field goal by Blake Heller (North Bellmore, N.Y.) and a Tyler Hyde (Plantsville, Conn.) touchdown pass to Jakai Whittingham (Meriden, Conn.).
A Season Ago...
In their last meeting on October 17, 2015, the Pride suffered a 22-21 setback to Merchant Marine.
Eglintine took charge of the Springfield offense with 108 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, while senior captain Max Nacewicz (Sandy Hook, Conn.) led all players with 15 tackles.
Springfield held a 21-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter, only to have Wiley Martin punch in a one-yard touchdown that capped a 12-play, 79 yard drive. The TD was set up by the previous play, a 25-yard pass by senior Matt McDaniels to classmate Dylan Crook that brought the ball down to the Pride's one-yard line. On what would prove to be the deciding play of the game, junior tight end Robert Baker hauled in a two-point conversion to give USMMA the 22-21 advantage with just 3:14 to play in the fourth.
Springfield currently ranks fourth Division III football in rushing, averaging 302.2 yards per game.
As a team, the Pride ranks 10th in sacks allowed per game (0.78), 18th in yards per completion (18.44), and 30th in red zone offense (.864).
