Springfield, Mass. - October 22, 2018 - Springfield College's Hunter Belzo (Middletown, Conn.) and Nick Giorgio (Cumberland, R.I.) were once again honored for their efforts on the gridiron by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). For the second time this season, Belzo was chosen as the NEWMAC Football Offensive Athlete of the Week, while Giorgio collected his second NEWMAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week recognition.
Belzo put together another dynamic offensive showing as he powered Springfield to a 23-11 win at Catholic on Saturday. The junior carried the ball 24 times for 148 yards and a touchdown, averaging over six yards per carry. Through the air, the Criminal Justice major completed 2-of-3 attempts for 37 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown strike. Behind his leadership, the Pride racked up totaled 344 rushing yards and averaged nearly six yards per offensive play.
Giorgio had a dominant showing on the defensive line on Saturday in the Pride's first-ever trip to Washington D.C. for a football game. The senior posted a team-best 11 tackles, including six solo stops, and was in the Cardinal's backfield all afternoon en route to six tackles for loss, which resulted in a loss of 29 yards. The Business Management major also totaled 2.5 sacks and his 19 tackles-for-loss this season currently ranks fourth in Division III football.
