Springfield, Mass. - October 2, 2018 - The Springfield College field hockey earned an important victory on Tuesday night as it blanked visiting Mount Holyoke College, 6-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
The win pushed Springfield's record to 8-3, 3-1 in conference play, while the Lyons fell to 5-7, 1-4.
Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.), who came into the game leading Division III field hockey in assists, added three more to her season total to tie the program's single-season mark of 15 which was set by Sue Bennett in 1986. Kyra Ashe (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Rachael Curtis (East Falmouth, Mass.) each scored twice for the Pride and Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) earned seven saves in goal for the win.
The Pride held an 18-15 edge in shots for the game, while Mount Holyoke took seven of the game's 10 penalty corners. For the visitors, Morgan Turner made four saves while allowing three goals and Maddie Miller turned away six shots while also surrendering three goals.
Springfield wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Nusbaum connected with Ashe at the 3:53 mark before Ashe pumped in an unassisted strike in the 19th minute. Nusbaum would then deliver a great feed to Curtis at 23:07 to give the hosts a 3-0 edge at the break.
In the second half, Ashe assisted on a strike to Kirsten Oliver (Vernon Center, N.Y.) in the 47th minute. Springfield's lead grew to 5-0 at 60:24 when Nusbaum registered her third helper of the night when Taylor Conley (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) buried her 16th goal of the season. Just over six minutes later, Curtis put the exclamation point on the conference victory as she finished off a feed from Gabby Inkel (South Windsor, Conn.) to conclude the scoring.
The Pride will play again on Friday night under the lights on Stagg when it hosts Smith at 6 pm.
