West Boylston, Mass. - October 2, 2016 - The Springfield College golf team wrapped up the 2016 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championships at Wachusett Country Club on Sunday and finished as the runner-up.
The Pride finished the two-day event with 637 strokes, finishing behind Babson, who won the title for the third-straight year after registering 597 strokes. Elms took third with 645 strokes, followed by Mitchell (710).
Three Springfield College student-athletes earned NECC All-Conference Second Team honors, led by Mike Strong (Newington, Conn.). The first-year fired his second-straight round of 78 on the Par 72 course to finish tied for sixth with a two-day total of 156. Doug Shane (Hamden, Conn.) shot Springfield's lowest round of the championship with a 76 on Sunday, also finishing tied for sixth with a 156. Travis Price (Reading, Mass.) delivered a 77 to place ninth after combining for a 157 to earn all-conference honors for the second-straight year. For his efforts, Price was also one of six student-athletes from the field to be named to the NECC All Sportsmanship Team.
Greg Allen (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) recorded a second-round score of 85 en route to his championship total of 168, while Matt Gazaille (Palmer, Mass.) wrapped up his first conference championship with consecutive 87's.
