West Boylston, Mass. - October 1, 2017 - Behind the outstanding play of Jake Raichle (Bethlehem, N.H.) and Mike Strong (Newington, Conn.), the Springfield College golf team finished as the runner-up at the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championships at Wachusett Country Club on Sunday.
Earning runner-up honors for the second-straight season, Springfield posted a two-day score of 621, shooting a 310 on Saturday and a 311 on Sunday. Babson won the title for the fourth-straight year after totaling 587 strokes. Springfield outdistanced the field in its second-place finish as Elms was a distance third (654), while Dean (677), Becker (687), Mitchell (701), and Eastern Nazarene (739).
Strong put together a terrific weekend as he finished fourth individually out of the 34-competitor field and posted a 75 after carding a 74 on Saturday. In his first NECC Championship appearance of his collegiate career, Raichle placed fifth as he fired a 72 on Sunday, the third lowest round of the two-day event of any student-athlete in the field, a day removed from turning in a 78. Strong had 25 pars on the weekend, the second-most in the field, while Raichle registered six birdies. For their efforts in placing in the top five of the conference, both Strong and Raichle earned NECC First-Team All-Conference honors.
Doug Shane (Hamden, Conn.) recorded an 80 for the second-straight day for the Pride as he finished 11th, while Matt Gazaille (Palmer, Mass.) placed 13th after a two-day score of 164, highlighted by a 78 on Saturday.
Travis Price (Reading, Mass.) was named to the NECC All-Sportsmanship Team for Springfield and totaled a 167, notching an 84 on Sunday after Saturday's round of 83.
Springfield will hit the links next Sunday when it stays in Western Massachusetts for the Elms Invitational which will take place at Hickory Ridge Golf Club.
