Brewster, Mass. - October 22, 2017 - First-year Jake Raichle (Bethlehem, N.H.) ) fired an even-round score of 72 to pace the Springfield College golf team, which in in eighth place after the first round of the 83rd New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship at the Captains Golf Course on Cape Cod.
Springfield as a team totaled 311 strokes while competing at the 6,724 yard, par 72 Port Course. Husson leads the 19-team field with 298 strokes, closely followed by Rhode Island College (303) and Babson (305), while Western New England (306) and Endicott (308) round of the top five.
Sunday's performance marked the second-time this season that Raichle carded a 72 and puts him in second-place individually among the 90-plus competitors in the championship. The rookie trails just Daullton Wickenden of Husson, who fired a 3-under 69.
Mike Strong (Newington, Conn.) delivered a 75 and is tied for 10th, while both Travis Price (Reading, Mass.) and Greg Allen (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) turned in rounds of 82 for Springfield. Matt Gazaille (Palmer, Mass.) was one shot behind the duo after posting a first-round score of 83.
Springfield will play in its final round of the fall season on the Starboard Course on Monday at 10 in the morning.
