West Boyleston, Mass. - September 23, 2018 - For the first time since 2012, the Springfield College golf team captured the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Golf Championship on Sunday at Wachusett Country Club.
After shooting a team score of 305 on Saturday, the Pride turned in a mark of 310 on Sunday en route to a winning score of 615 to outdistance the field by 20 strokes. Elms was second with a 635, followed by Mitchell (643), Eastern Nazarene (685), and Dean (725).
In his 26th season at the helm of the program, Springfield's Joe Eadie was named the NECC Coach of the Year, as he guided Springfield to their third NECC title.
Sophomore Jake Raichle (Bethlehem, N.H.) was tabbed the NECC Golfer of the Year after winning the individual title with back-to-back rounds of 74 to finish +4 for the championship. Raichle totaled seven birdies over the weekend and played the par 4's at +2, both of which were the best marks in the championship field.
Teammate Mike Strong (Newington, Conn.) joined Raichle on the all-conference team and was also chosen to the all-sportsmanship team as he took runner-up honors with a 150 (+6), including a 77 on Sunday. Consistent throughout the championship, Strong posted a championship-best 27 pars in the 36-hole event.
In a three-way tie for fifth, Joe Piwowarski (Cumberland, Maine) also garnered all-conference honors following consecutive rounds of 79. Matt Gazaille (Palmer, Mass.) finished one-shot behind him with a two-day score of 159, including an 80 on Sunday. Additionally, Corey Roya (Manchester, Conn.) tied for 14th among the 24-player field after posting a 164.
