Golf Tied For Sixth After Opening Round of Rhode Island College Invitational

Cranston, R.I. - April 5, 2019 - Opening up the spring portion of its schedule on Friday afternoon, the Springfield College golf team started off the Rhode Island College Invitational in promising fashion while playing at the Valley Country Club.

Of the 14  teams competing in the tournament, Springfield is tied for sixth place are turning in a first-round score of 321.  Johnson & Wales led the field with a team score of 310, closely followed by UMass Dartmouth (311), while both Endicott and Tufts scored a 313, WNE registered a 318, and the Pride and Roger Williams were tied for sixth place. 

Matt Gazaille (Palmer, Mass.) had an outstanding first round of the spring season as he fired a 76 to be tied for fourth individually among the 73 competitors in the event. Mike Strong (Newington, Conn.) also broke 80 for the Pride with a 78, which has him in a tie for 13th place.   Jake Raichle (Bethlehem, N.H.)  carded an 82, while Doug Shane (Hamden, Conn.) registered an 85 and Corey Roya (Manchester, Conn.) recorded an 86. 

Springfield will finish the two-day tournament on Saturday beginning at 1 pm.
