Men's Gymnatics Opens Season at the West Point Open

West Point, N.Y. - January 13, 2016 - The Springfield College men's gymnastics team opened up the 2017 campaign competing in the 26th annual West Point Open at the United States Military Academy on Friday evening.

Penn State (412.35) won the Open for the fourth-straight year and 19th time overall holding off the advances of the Huskers (410.60) who placed second. Army was third with 393.55 points edging out Arizona State (392.75), Navy (391.25), Springfield (390.55) and Temple (372.25).

In the all-round competitoin, Joshua Dieker (Oviedo, Fla.) took 10th with a 78.050, closely followed by first-year Stephen Lewis (Baltimore, Md. ), who finished 11th in his first collegiate action with a 77.550.

Indivdually, four Springfield College gymnasts advanced to Saturday's finals. Giancarlo Lawrence (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored a 13.950 on the floor exercise, the sixth-best score of the night, to advance to Saturday, while Lewis tallied a 13.400 on the pommel horse.  Dieker's mark of 14.000 tied for fifth on the rings and Jannik Haas (San Jose, Calif.) registered a 13.450 on the high bar, which was good enough to tie for fifth.

In addition, Lewis had Springfield's top score on the vault with a 13.850, while Haas totaled a 12.900 on the parallel bars to pace the Pride.
