Colorado Springs, Colo. - March 23, 2019 - Despite eight goals from Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.), the Springfield College men's lacrosse team was edged by Colorado College, 13-12, in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride dropped its second-straight one-goal game as it fell to 2-5 on the season.
Vail's eight goals is the third-highest single-game total in NCAA Division III play this season, and the senior added an assist to factor in on nine of Springfield's 12 goals. Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash.) also had another strong outing, totaling three assists and two goals, while Cole Finerty (Kensington, N.H.) made nine saves in goal. The Pride held a slight 53-50 edge in shots, but were unable to capitalize on any of their seven man-up chances.
For Colorado College, Coby Petau notched four goals and an assist, Tyler Borko produced three goals and three assists, John Sutro recorded a hat trick, and Andrew Harwood put together a 17-save performance between the pipes.
Despite taking 18 shots in the opening quarter, Springfield was unable to find the back of the cage and found itself trailng 4-0 after 15 minutes of action. Hawley struck for the Pride's first goal of the game just 1:12 into the second quarter as he stuffed home a shot off a feed from Zachary Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), only to have Borko answer with his second of the afternoon with 12:06 left in the half. Vail would sandwich a pair of goals around Petau's third goal of the day to pull the Pride within 6-3 at the half.
After Matt Huggett (Greenfield, Mass.) converted along the crease for a goal at the 13:10 mark of the second half to make it a two-goal contest, Colorado College responded with two goals in just over a minute to push their advantage back to four-goals at 8-4. Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.) answered back for Springfield at 8:56 on an assist from Hawley and Vail cleaned up his own rebound at 4:14 to once again bring Springfield within two goals. However, Colorado College would again use a two-goal burst, this time in just 27 seconds, to gain a 10-6 cushion with 3:10 on the clock.
Hawley found the back of the cage with 1:43 left in the third before Vail scored three-straight goals in the opening seven-plus minutes of the fourth as he picked apart the Tigers zone defense to knot the game at 10-10. Colorado College would snap the four-goal run when Sutro snuck a shot inside the near post at 5:30, but Vail again had an answer just five seconds later. Borko scored again for the hosts one minute later, only to have Vail make a pair of terrific moves to get free at 3:04 for his eighth goal of the afternoon.
The Pride won the ensuing faceoff, but was unable to take advantage of a pair of possessions, leading up to what would be the game-winner strike for the hosts. Coming out of a timeout, Petau got free on an inside roll along the crease to net the go-ahead goal with 56 ticks remaining,
Springfield will continue non-conference play on Tuesday when it wrap up its six-game road swing at No. 2 Amherst for a 4:30 tilt.
