Plattsburgh, N.Y. - August 31, 2018 - Behind a three-point performance from freshman forward Andrew Ma (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), the Springfield College men's soccer team defeated Potsdam, 2-0, in the Pride's season-opening contest. The game was a part of the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic, hosted at Plattsburgh.
Additionally, Springfield's victory marked Tommy Crabill's first-career victory as a collegiate head coach.
Ma finished with a goal and an assist, while senior Brad Deckel (Lansdale, Pa.) notched his first of the season in the 11th minute to get the Pride on the board. In net, senior goalkeeper Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) made three stops and earned his first win of the 2018 season.
Following a corner kick just 9:25 into the contest, Deckel was able to collect the ball and find the back of the net to give the Pride an early 1-0 lead. Just 17:30 later, Springfield College pushed its lead to a pair when Joseph Olaynack (Middletown, R.I.) set up Ma for his first-career goal to make it 2-0 with 17:25 to play in the opening half.
Springfield College's defensive unit held tough for the remainder of the contest, as the maroon and white was able to seal the season-opening shutout.
The Pride will resume play in the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic on Saturday, September 1 when it takes on host Plattsburgh at 3:30 p.m.
