Men's Soccer Earns 2-1 Win Over Plattsburgh to Claim Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic Title

Plattsburgh, N.Y. - September 1, 2018 - Behind a three-point performance from senior Brad Deckel (Lansdale, Pa.), the Springfield College men's soccer team won its second-consecutive contest to begin the season, a 2-1 result against Plattsburgh that earned the Pride a title at the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Pride improves to 2-0 on the year, while the Cardinals are now 0-2 to begin 2018. Springfield College owned a 19-11 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, as it was also awarded five corner kicks to Plattsburgh's four. In net, senior goalkeeper Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) registered three saves in his second win of the season, while his counterpart, Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) notched seven saves in the setback.

For their efforts, Deckel was named the Tournament's Offensive MVP, while Frank was the Defensive MVP and freshman forward Andrew Ma (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Deckel's three-point performance on Saturday was a part of a special weekend for the senior, as he recorded five points en route to two victories for the Pride. Additionally, Christian Schneider (Douglas, Mass.) posted his first marker of the season, while Xavi Arroyo (Concord, Mass.) assisted on Deckel's goal in the 35th minute.

Deckel found the back of the net with 10:23 to play in the first half on a feed from Arroyo, before Schneider opened the second frame with his first of the year, buring a pass from Deckel just 5:18 into the half. Plattsburgh would pull to within one in the 84th minute on a goal from Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y.), but the Pride was able to keep the Cardinals at bay for the duration of the contest.

Springfield College will now travel to Brandeis on Wednesday, September 5, as the Pride will take on the nationally-ranked Judges at 7 p.m.
