Cherackal Named Full-Time Assistant Men's Soccer Coach at Springfield College

Springfield, Mass. - June 12, 2019 - Springfield College Director of Athletics, Dr. Craig Poisson, is pleased to announce that Joe Cherackal has been named the full-time assistant men's soccer coach at Springfield College.

"I am excited and deeply grateful for the opportunity to become a part of the men's soccer program and the athletic department at Springfield College," commented Cherackal. "I want to thank head men's soccer coach Tommy Crabill and Director of Athletics, Dr. Craig Poisson, for placing their trust in me. I plan to be a positive role model and help each student-athlete realize their full potential both on the field and in the classroom. I look forward to helping the soccer program and department in it's continued growth and success."

Cherackal comes to Springfield College after serving as an assistant coach with the Wesleyan University men's soccer program for the last four seasons. During his time with the Cardinals, Cherackal earned a Master's degree in Liberal Studies, which he completed this past spring. In 2009, Cherackal also earned a Bachelor's degree from Holy Cross, where he was a member of the men's soccer team for two seasons.

"We look forward to having Coach Cherackal join our men's soccer program at Springfield College," said Poisson. "Based on his prior experiences as a coach and a recruiter, Joe will have an immediate impact in the on and off-field experiences of our men's soccer student-athletes."

Cherackal grew from within the Cardinals' program, as he started as a volunteer coach in 2014, before being promoted to the sub-varsity head coach in 2015. He then moved into the top assistant position prior to the 2017 season. During his time with Wesleyan, Cherackal contributed to running every facet of the program, primarily focused on recruiting, video editing, scouting reports, administering and running on-campus ID clinics, and running on-field sessions. In addition to his roles with Wesleyan, Cherackal was also a club coach with Blackrock FC, starting in 2017.

"We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to add Joe to our staff from what was a highly competitive application pool," said head men's soccer coach at Springfield College, Tommy Crabill. "His background in the game stood out as an experienced recruiter. We will count on his on-field coaching and his stellar skills in communication and eye for top recruits that will make an impact on our campus. I'm excited to have his influence on our roster of ambitious student-athletes and his presence in our athletic department at Springfield College."

Cherackal, a native of Portland, Conn., currently had a USSF Soccer National "D" Coaching License, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

Also joining the Springfield College men's soccer staff in 2019 will be first-year graduate assistant Brendan McNamee, who comes to Springfield College after graduating from St. Lawrence this past Spring. McNamee, who was a captain for the Saints during their postseason run in 2018, helped lead St. Lawrence to an overall record of 47-15-8 over the past four seasons, which has also included a pair of Liberty League titles and three trips to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
