Blakesley and Fitzgerald Earn NEWMAC Weekly Honors

Springfield, Mass. – November 23, 2009 – The duo of Andrew Blakesley and Matt Fitzgerald led the Springfield men’s swimming and diving team to three victories over the weekend and were honored by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for their efforts. Blakesley was named the NEWMAC Swimmer of the Week, while Fitzgerald earned NEWMAC Diver of the Week honors.

Blakesley, a local product from West Springfield, Mass. had a very strong weekend for the Pride as it defeated Keene State, Wheaton, and Middlebury. In Saturday’s tri-meet, he was victorious in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.5, and also took home first place honors in the 100 free (47:39), and the 500 free (4:52.22). At Middlebury on Sunday, Blakesley was victorious in the 200 IM (2:03.20) and the 500 free (5:04.55).

Fitzgerald had a tremendous weekend for Springfield as he helped Springfield its three victories. In the tri-meet with the Owls and Lyons on Saturday, the Pelham, N.H. native won the one-meter by scoring 264.80 points and the three-meter with national-qualifying score of 287.05 points. The next day, the senior swept the diving competition with wins in the three-meter (287.33) and the one-meter (258.00). His performance on the three-meter once again met national qualifying standards.
