Worcester, Mass. – October 31, 2009 – The Springfield College mens swimming and diving team cruised in its season opener as it toppled Holy Cross, 189-110, on Saturday afternoon. Nolan Manley and Ryan Mackstutis had standout performances for Springfield on the day.
The Pride began the meet with a victory in the Open 200 Medley. The team of Jerome Cummiskey, Brian Way, Nolan Manley, and Mike Demellia scored a first place finish in the event with a time of 1:42.95.
The third event of the day saw Cummiskey take the 200 Free title in 1:52.31. Shortly after that, junior Andrew Blakesley captured his first victory of the season, edging out the competition with a time of 1:01.29 in the 100 Breast.
Back-to-back victories were taken in the pool by Ryan Mackstutis in the 50 Free (22.34) and the 100 Free (51.11).
Way was able to earn his first individual victory of the season in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:16.62, immediately followed by Manley recording his first victory in the 500 Free (5:02.67).
The dominance continued as senior Matt Manoni swam to victory in the 100 Fly (58.42), and Blakesley cruised to the 200 IM victory in 2:03.73.
On the diving boards, Mattthew Fitzgerald won the one-meter with a score of 260.32. Freshman Tim Ramos made a tremendous first impression, winning the 200 Fly (2:02.22), and the 200 Back (2:10.80).
The day was capped when the 200 Free relay team of Manley, Cummiskey, Ramos, and Blakesley won in 1:32.30.
The Pride return to action Saturday, November 14 when it heads to Kingston, R.I. for a 1:00 pm meet against the University of Rhode Island.
