Springfield, Mass. — January 15, 2012 — The Springfield College men’s swimming and diving team had a tough weekend in falling twice to a pair of New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference competitors in the Coast Guard Academy and MIT at SC’s Art Linkletter Natatorium on Sunday. Kenny Pancoast was a bright light with his firsts in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
The junior from Monroe, Conn. garnered the top spot in the 1-meter event with 255.80 points. He did the same in the 3-meter with 297.25 points.
SC did not fare as well in the overall team scores. The Pride lost to MIT, 231-68, and did the same to Coast Guard, 203-96.
Other SC competitors who finished in the top five of their event included freshman Trevor Ferraro (Southbury, Conn.) in the 100-yard breaststroke. He finished fifth in 1:05.84.
Senior Josh Ernst (West Springfield, Mass.) claimed a fifth in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.45. And freshman Brad Mills took a fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:22.02.
Returning to the diving events, besides Pancoast’s first, in the 3-meter dive, SC placed 3-4-5-6. In order, they included freshman Jack Lewis (Durham, N.H.), sophomore Dalton Crantek (Saugerties, N.Y.), sophomore Pat Smith (Niskayuna, N.Y.), and senior Tyler Gunningsmith (Trumansburg, N.Y.). And in the 1-meter dive, again besides Pancoast’s top spot, SC again finished 3-4-5-6. This time the order of finish for those four places were Crantek, Lewis, Smith, and junior Derek Shaver (Springfield, Mass.).
Next Saturday, SC will host Williams at 1 pm in the Linkletter Natatorium.
