Springfield, Mass. - January 19, 2019 - The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team battled their way to a split with Wesleyan and Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon in a tri-meet in the Art Linkletter Natatorium. The Pride handled Wesleyan, 218-71, and was bested by Roger Williams, 177-121.
Connor Pennington (Monson, Mass.) highlighted the meet for the Pride as he produced a pair of national-qualifying scores on the diving boards. The sophomore won the three-meter by nearly 60 points as he totaled a 314.05 before he won the one-meter with a score of 313.05, which was 50 points better than the field.
To open the afternoon, Sean Harnish (Middlebury, Conn.), Anthony Soares (Worcester, Mass.), Andy Endress (Belchertown, Mass.), and Sean Mitchell (Canton, Mass.) took second in the 200 medley relay in 1:41.53.
In the 1,000 free, Nicholas Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.) was victorious in 10:18.69, and Erik Jensen (Hainesport, N.J.) swept the butterfly events, posting a winning time of 2:02.42 in the 200 fly and turning a 54.34 in the 100 fly. Jensen also finished second in the 200 free with a 1:47.59
Harnish would also win the 500 free in 5:01.38, was the runner up in the 200 back after posting a 2:06.92, and placed third in the 100 back in 55.95. Michael Allo (Newington, Conn.) scored second-place points in the 200 breast with a 2:18.65 and was third in the 200 IM in 2:10.40, while Soares added a third-place finish in the 100 breast after touching in 1:05.12, and Mitchell sprinted to third in the 50 free in 22.98.
Next Saturday, Springfield will make the trip to Worcester to square off against Division I foe Holy Cross in a 1 pm showdown.
