Wretham, Mass. - October 3, 2018 - Competing in a match for the first time this season as a team, the Springfield College men's tennis squad prevailed by a 6-3 score of Gordon on Wednesday afternoon.
For head coach Mike Louis, it marked his first win with the men's program as the Pride's new head coach.
Springfield got off to a great start as it earned a pair of victories in doubles play. The team of Jack Anastopoulos (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and Drew Delorenzo (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) started things off with an 8-3 win at No. 3, before the duo of Jack Wheeler (Irvine, Calif.) and Court Honda (Morioka, Japan) later picked up an 8-5 victory at the top spot for the Pride.
Freddie Moffa (Granby, Conn.) added to Springfield's advantage with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 to begin singles play, and Honda grinded out a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot. Lucas VanDeventer (Ellington, Conn.) eventually clinched the win for the Pride by virtue of his 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 triumph at the No. 6 position. DeLorenzo would be the last point, and last match to get off the courts, on the night as he registered a 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-2 win at No. 3.
Springfield will hit the courts again next Wednesday when they host Holy Cross at 4:00 pm.
