Springfield, Mass. - April 7, 2019 - The Springfield College men's tennis team battled their way to a 5-4 win over visiting Colby-Sawyer in a non-conference battle on Sunday at Appleton Courts.
Springfield was able to win only one of the three doubles points, as Drew DeLorenzo (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Court Honda (Morioka, Japan) eased their way to an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot. The Pride came up just short in the other two matches, as Freddie Moffa (Granby, Conn.) and Jack Anastopoulos (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and Hieu Ton (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and James Foley (Fair Haven, N.J.) each were bested by an 8-6 score.
The hosts bounced back in singles action, winning four of the six matches to claim the non-conference win. Honda was the first off the court by virtue of a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1, only to have Colby-Sawyer pick up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to come within one point of clinching the match. However, Anastoploulos responded with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 4, Ton produced a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6, and Lucas Van Deventer (Ellington, Conn.) sealed the triumph with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5.
The Pride will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday when it hosts Emerson at 4 pm.
