Napersville, Ill. - March 11, 2017 - Springfield College senior Alex Niemiec (Chicopee, Mass.) finished in a tie for second in the high jump at the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday morning to earn All-America honors.
Niemiec, a 5-foot-7 Physical Education major, entered the competition ranked tied for fourth in all of Division III. On Saturday, he registered a mark of 6'9" (2.06m) in his third and final attempt to finish in a tie for second on the national stage. Niemiec becomes just the second Springfield College student-athlete to earn All-America honors in the event, joining Justin Welch, who finished eighth at the NCAA Indoor Division III Championships in 2004.
This marks the second different event that Niemiec has finished as the national runner up, as in the spring of 2015, Niemiec finished second in the long jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships, with a distance of 24 feet, 5 inches.
Niemiec punched his ticket to the national championships when he cleared a height of 6 feet, 10.25 inches in the Pride's first meet of the season, the Springfield College Season Opener on December 3.
