Springfield, Mass. - January 3, 2017 - Springfield College seniors Luis Vega (Corozal, Puerto Rico) and Luis Garcia Rubio (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) were each named to the 2017 Off The Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-America Team.
Last season, both Vega and Garcia Rubio earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Men's Division III First Team All-America recognition and helped lead the Pride to a remarkable seventh-straight appearance in the Division III men's volleyball national championship match.
Vega had a dominant 2016 season on the pin for the Pride as the Physical Education major led the team with 376 kills, hitting at an impressive .390 clip, and ranked second on the squad in digs (167), blocks (85), and aces (47). He ranked in the top 20 nationally points per set (6th, 4.58), kills per set (12th, 3.65), and hitting percentage (17th, .390).
Garcia Rubio is coming off a breakout junior season fo the Pride in which he led an offense that had the top team hitting percentage in all of college volleyball at .382. The Business Management major finished second in the country with 11.21 assists per game and registered 103 digs, 48 blocks, and 15 aces this season.
A nationwide voting committee selected 10 players to the 2017 Off the Block/Springback, Inc. Preseason All-America Team. Springfield and Carthage led the nation with two Preseason All-American selections, as the 11-member voting committee for this preseason honor was comprised of Division III men's volleyball head coaches from around the nation. The top 10 vote-getters from the committee's ballots earned a spot on the Preseason All-American Team.
For the seventh time in the past eight years, the Springfield College men's volleyball program will open up the season in California as it takes on Hope International on January 13.
