Kissimmee, Fla. – March 13, 2017 - The Springfield College softball picked up two more wins on Monday at the Osceola County Softball Complex, as the Pride defeated Wooster, 4-3, before coming from behind to beat St. Norbert College, 6-5.
With the wins, Springfield College is now 4-0 overall, and is off to its best start since the 2014 season.
Leading the Pride in game one was Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.), as the junior pitched 5.0 innings while giving up just seven hits and three runs in the circle, and went 3-for-4 with three RBI at the plate. In game two, sophomore pitcher Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) stole the show, as she pitched 4.0 innings, gave up just five hits and struck out five batters.
The Pride will resume action on Tuesday, March 13, when it will take on Westminster (Pa.) and Cornell College at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively.
Springfield 4, Wooster 3 – Game One
Loda drove in three runs and scored the other as the Springfield College softball team picked up a 4-3 win over Wooster, the Pride's third win of the season. As productive as she was offensively, Loda was instrumental in shutting down the Fighting Scots' bats, as she pitched 5.0 innings, holding Wooster to just three runs.
Springfield College took advantage of a defensive mishap to plate its first run it the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead, before the Pride extended its lead to a pair when Padroff crossed home on a single to left field from Loda.
After Wooster cut its deficit in half in the top of the third, Springfield College tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Loda laced a single to center, plating Padroff and Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) to make it 4-1, Pride.
Wooster's Stephanie Little (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) drove in a pair in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Fighting Scots' lead to one, but Jordyn Moquin (Southington, Conn.) iced the Wooster bats in the final two frames to pick up the save.
Springfield 6, St. Norbert 5 – Game Two
Led by the strong arm of Allen, Springfield College picked up three runs in the top of the seventh to complete the come-from-behind victory, a 6-5 win over St. Norbert on Monday afternoon. Allen pitched 4.0 innings and struck out five to earn her first win of the year.
Junior infielder Mackenzie Navarro (Taunton, Mass.) was impressive at the plate, as she went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs, while Wheeler's two-run single in the top of the seventh proved to lift the Pride to victory.
It didn't take long for Springfield College to get on the board, as Navarro drove a ball to right field in the top of the first that scored Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. St. Norbert responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame, before taking a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a single to center from Maria Reiter (Neenah, Wis.).
Springfield College started its comeback in the top of the fourth, when Alexyss Conley (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Brianna Weltlich (Russell, Mass.), before Gabby Alfieri (Cornwall, N.Y.) picked up a huge one-run single to center, plating Gasdia.
Springfield College added three runs in the top of the seventh, as Navarro poked one to center, scoring Rachel Ball (Coventry, R.I.), before Wheeler drilled a pinch-hit single up the middle to drive Alfieri and Navarro home, giving the Pride a 6-3 advantage.
The Knights got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh, but Allen quickly shut the door, forcing a pop out to first to seal the win.
