Gasdia and Wheeler Garner ECAC Division III New England Softball Weekly Honors

Danbury, Conn. - March 22, 2017 - Junior Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) and freshman Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) have been recognized for their standout performances this past week, as each garnered Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Softball weekly honors, announced on Wednesday.

Gasdia, who has already been recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) as a national top performer and the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) as the Player of the Week, was named the ECAC Division III New England Player of the Week. Wheeler, a freshman outfielder for the Pride, was named the ECAC Division III New England Rookie of the Week after helping to lead the Pride to an overall record of 9-1 to start the season, its best since 1996.

In addition to Gasdia being named a top performer by the NFCA, junior pitcher Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) was also recognized on the national level after going 4-0 with an earned-run average of 0.84.

Gasdia was instrumental in leading the Pride to a 9-1 record on Spring Break in Kissimmee, Fla. to start the season. At the plate, Gasdia went a combined 18-for-27, hitting .667 with an on-base percentage of .700 and a slugging percentage of .741. Gasdia's week included a pair of doubles, five RBi and 10 runs scored. Gasdia also stole seven bases without being caught. Defensively, Gasdia had five put outs and two assists, while making no errors.

Wheeler, a Health Promotions for Schools and Communities major, finished the week with a batting average of .435, as she registered 10 hits in 23 at bats, two doubles, six RBI and her first-career home run in the Pride's win over Lesley. It has been an incredible start to a promising career for Wheeler, as she also scored four runs and stole three bases.
Gasdia, Wheeler and the rest of the Pride will resume play on Saturday, March 25, when it takes on Coast Guard at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
