Danbury, Conn. - March 29, 2017 - Springfield College's Kirsten Drobiak (Griswold, Conn.) and Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) of the softball program have been recognized for their impressive performances this past week, as the duo picked up Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England softball weekly honors.
Drobiak, a junior infielder for the Pride, was named the ECAC Division III New England Player of the Week, while Wheeler was named the ECAC Division III Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.
Improving to 11-1 this past weekend, Springfield College was No. 24 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Rankings, also announced on Wednesday. This marks the first time since 2001 that a Springfield College softball program became nationally ranked.
Drobiak was instrumental in leading the Pride to a pair of NEWMAC victories over Coast Guard this past Saturday. The Physician Assistant major went a combined 6-for-7 at the plate, totaled five RBI, and scored a pair of runs for the Pride. Highlighting her performance was a walk-off grand slam in the Pride's first game of the day, leading Springfield College to victory.
Wheeler, a freshman outfielder for Springfield College, continued her incredible start to the season, as she went 5-for-7 in the Pride's two games on Saturday, totaling three RBI, a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Wheeler has been impressive defensively as well, as she has upheld a fielding percentage of 1.000 in the Pride's first 13 games of the season.
The Pride will resume action on Wednesday, March 29 when it travels to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. for a non-conference doubleheader with Skidmore.
