Worcester, Mass. - April 14, 2017 - The Springfield College softball team split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader with Clark on Friday afternoon at O'Brien Field. The Pride won the first of two games, 2-0, before Clark rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to escape game two with a 3-2 win.
Springfield College, which was ranked No. 19 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Rankings, is now 23-5 overall and 9-3 against conference opponents. The Pride's 23 wins matches Springfield College's win total from the 2016 season.
Up next, Springfield College will travel to Babson on Saturday, April 15 for a 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. doubleheader with the Beavers.
Springfield College 2, Clark 0 -- Game One
Standout junior Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) pitched a complete-game shutout while striking out nine and holding the Cougars to just two hits, en route to her 12th win of the season. Freshman outfielder Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) hit her fourth home run of the year. The Springfield College softball team picked up its 23rd win of the season in the first leg of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon at O'Brien Field.
The Pride was limited to just five hits, as the Cougars' starter, Sami West (Gonic, N.H.) also pitched a complete game while striking out nine.
Springfield College got on the board in the top of the second on an RBI triple off the bat of Meghan Sastram (Oxford, Conn.) to score Gabby Alfieri (Cornwall, N.Y.). The Pride's bats were quieted until Wheeler took a pitch deep over the center-field fence for her fourth home run of the season, providing Springfield College with an insurance run.
Clark was threatening in the bottom of the sixth, but Loda was able to get out of the jam by fanning Kendra Walker (Cumberland, R.I.). Loda earned the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
Clark 3, Springfield College 2 -- Game Two
Clark rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walk-off win over the Pride in the second game of Friday afternoon's doubleheader on O'Brien Field. With a Leah Bodin (Andover, Vt.) on third, Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) flew out to center, but Bodin was able to tag up and score to complete the come-back victory.
Sophomore pitcher Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) was strong through six, as she struck out seven while only giving up four hits. Offensively, seven players had at least one hit, while Wheeler and Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) each picked up RBI.
Springfield College jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Wheeler drove in Loda with a single to right field, before the Pride doubled its lead in the top of the fifth when Gasdia doubled to left, scoring Mackenzie Navarro (Taunton, Mass.) to make it 2-0.
Clark drew back-to-back walks before a single from Sarah Woods (Littleton, Mas.) singled to load the bases. After Taylor Erickson (Natick, Mass.) scored on a groundout to cut the Pride's lead in half, Jocie Orangio (Maynard, Mass.) singled up the middle, scoring West to even the score at two. Springfield College's Jordyn Moquin (Southington, Conn.) went in to try and get the Pride out of a jam, but Mackey took a full-count pitch deep to left, allowing Bodin to score.
