Wellesley, Mass. - April 17, 2018 - The Springfield College softball team split a pair of games with Wellesley in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon at Potter Field.
With the split, the Pride is now 19-9 overall with a 7-7 record in NEWMAC play, while the Blue is now 7-18 overall and 4-10 in league play.
Springfield College will resume play on Wednesday, April 18 when the Pride travels to Westfield State for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Springfield College 7, Wellesley 3 -- Game One
Springfield College took advantage of four Wellesley errors and Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) picked up her 10th win of the season as the Pride defeated the Blue, 7-3, in the first of two games at Potter Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Loda and Yaixsa Vargas (Waterbury, Conn.) went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Loda finished the game pitching 7.0 innings, giving up just three hits while striking out four.
The Pride tallied two runs in the bottom of the first when Wheeler singled down the right-field line, plating Kirsten Drobiak (Griswold, Conn.), before Vargas stole home on a heads-up base running play at third. Wellesley would score one in the top of the fourth and two in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead over the Pride, but in the bottom half of the fifth, Springfield College rallied for four runs to take a 6-3 lead over the Blue.
The rally began with an RBI single from Alexyss Conley (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) to score Vargas, before Gabby Alfieri (Cornwall, N.Y.) knocked an infield single to short, plating Wheeler to give the Pride a one-run lead. Next up, Meghan Sastram (Oxford, Conn.) reached on an error to score Conley, before Jen Slane (Tolland, Conn.) rounded out the frame with a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Alfieri to score.
Springfield College added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Drobiak scored on a wild pitch, making it 7-3.
Wellesley 6, Springfield College 5 -- Game Two
Hampered by five defensive errors, the Pride dropped game two of the NEWMAC doubleheader, 6-5, at Potter Field on Tuesday afternoon. Junior pitcher Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) took the loss as she pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three earned runs, while Marisa Valenti (Trumbull, Conn.) came in and only allowed four hits over 2.2 frames.
After Wellesley scored two runs in the top of the first, Springfield College answered with a pair in the bottom half of the frame, as Vargas drove in Gasdia on a fielder's choice, before Drobiak scored when Sastram reached on an error at third base.
Drobiak singled through the left side to plate Gasdia in the bottom of the second, making it 3-2 Springfield, but Wellesley would once again even the score when Amanda Manning (Chico, Calif.) scored on an error at second base.
The Blue tacked on two in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead, before the Pride rallied for a pair in the bottom of the sixth on the pinch-hit single from Slane, but the rally fell short.
