Kissimmee, Fla. - March 21, 2019 - The Springfield College softball game split its third doubleheader of Spring Break at the Osceola County Softball Complex on Thursday, as the Pride defeated St. Norbert College, 4-3, before falling to Bethel, 10-4.
With the split, the Pride is now 5-3 in Florida, while St. Norbert fell to 4-3 with the loss. Bethel is now 10-1 with the victory.
Up next, Springfield College will wrap up its annual trip down south with a pair of games on Friday, March 22, as the Pride will take on Endicott at 9:45 a.m., before battling Ripon at 2 p.m.
Springfield College 4, St. Norbert College 3 -- Game One
Senior pitcher Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) got the nod and pitched 4.0 innings, giving up just four hits and no runs, while also striking out four batters. Junior Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) came on in relief and pitched 1.0 frames, before Marisa Valenti (Trumbull, Conn.) finished off the last 2.0 innings, picking up her second save of the year.
Springfield College scored first in the top of the third inning when Wheeler singled up the middle, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. The junior eventually got to third base on a single from Allen, before Ava Fernandez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) brought her home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Pride added three more in the top of the fourth when Alexyss Conley (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) started the inning with a bunt single down the third-base line, before Jen Slane (Tolland, Conn.) singled to left center, plating Conley all the way from first base. Sophomore Hannah Salvietti (Cheshire, Conn.) would pinch run for Slane, and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.), before Gabrielle Alfieri (Cornwall, N.Y.) doubled to left center to plate the freshman, making it 4-0, Springfield College.
St. Norbert would rally in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs to make it a 4-3 game, but from there, Valenti would shut down the rally, resulting in the 4-3 victory for the Pride.
Bethel 10, Springfield College 4 -- Game Two
Salvietti went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Allen struck out seven batters but the Pride fell in its second game of the day, 10-4, to Bethel University.
Allen pitched 4.1 innings, giving up seven hits and five earned runs, before Valenti came on in relief and hurled 2.2 frames, also giving up five earned runs. Allen took the loss, which was her first of the 2019 season.
The Royals struck with one run in the top of the second and one in the top of the third, before the maroon and white rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage. Sparking the rally, Fernandez walked, before coming around on a single up the middle off the bat of Meghan Sastram (Oxford, Conn.). Salviettie then brought home Kane and Taylor Mancinone (Watertown, Conn.) to give the Pride a one-run lead. Later in the inning, Salvietti would score on a wild pitch to make it 4-2, Springfield College.
From there, it was all Bethel, as the Royals picked up five runs in the top of the fifth inning, before sealing the win with two insurance runs in the top of the sixth.
