Women's Basketball Falls to Waynesburg in ECAC Championship Semifinals

Pittsburgh, Pa. - March 4, 2017 - The Springfield College women's basketball team's impressive 2016-17 season came to a close on Saturday evening, as the Pride fell to Waynesburg, 79-50, on Saturday night in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Semifinals at Carnegie Mellon University.

With the loss, Springfield College closes its season with an overall record of 20-9, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 19-11 on the year, and will advance to the ECAC Championship game, where it will face top-seeded Carnegie Mellon on Sunday at 12 p.m.

The Pride, which shot 28.1 percent (18-of-64) from the field in the setback, was led by senior center Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.), who finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Chelsea McAllister (Baltimore, Vt.) and freshman Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) notched seven points apiece.

The Yellow Jackets, which shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) in the win, was led by senior Katie Gehlmann (Johnstown, Pa.), who totaled 17 points, including a trio of three-pointers in the second half, and Monica Starre (Jewett, Ohio), who posted 16 points, six rebounds and four assists in the win.

Waynesburg took early control of the game when Addy Knetzer (Houston, Pa.) nailed a jumper just 3:00 in to make it 7-4, before the Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to five on a jumper from Starre with 2:53 on the clock. Waynesburg would continue to build on its lead, taking a 17-8 advantage at the end of one.

The Yellow Jackets would take a 12-point lead on a jumper from Haley Delaney (Mainville, Ohio), but Springfield College would claw back into the contest on a triple from Lauren Rudolph (Franklin, Mass.) and a lay-up from McAllister to make it 22-17, Yellow Jackets, with 6:49 to play in the half. A basket from Adamopoulos cut the Pride's deficit to four with 3:03 left but a 5-0 run to close out the half for Waynesburg gave the orange and hit a 32-23 lead at the break. 

Waynesburg would quickly push its lead to 16 to being the third quarter on back-to-back three-pointers from Gehlmann, before the senior converted again at the 5:54 mark to give the Yellow Jackets a 19-point advantage. Mackenna Drazich (Avella, Pa.) would end the quarter with a lay-up to make it 56-35, Waynesburg.

The Pride would cut its deficit to 20 on a three-pointer from Jacques with 6:31 to play, before the Yellow Jackets pushed its lead back to 24 on a triple from Kassidy O'Keefe (Heidelberg, Pa.) with 3:38 to go. From there, Waynesburg would continue to pour it on to seal the win.
