Wellesley, Mass. - April 20, 2019 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team pushed its winning streak to six games as the Pride defeated Wellesley, 19-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Pride is now 9-6 overall with a 5-2 record against league foes, while Wellesley falls to 5-10 on the year with a 1-6 record in the NEWMAC. Springfield College produced 35 shots, while limiting the Blue to just 10 in 60 minutes of play. The Pride also hauled in 16 draw controls compared to Wellesley's eight, and won the ground-ball battle, 26-16.
In net, Brenna Keefe (Acton, Mass.) only needed three saves to seal her ninth win of the year, while Abby Koehler (New Durham, N.H.) played the final 3:00 to ensure the victory. Sophomore attack Kate Sarnacki (Granby, Mass.) led the Pride's offense with seven points on five goals and two assists, while Katie Martel (Granby, Conn.) added three first-half strikes. Gabby Fogg (Wells, Maine) had a game-high five draw controls, while Keefe, Fogg, and Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) all had four ground balls.
Sarnacki opened the game's scoring just 2:40 into the contest with an unassisted goal on a free-position strike, before Wellesley evened the score at one apiece just 40 seconds later on a goal from Ellie Chalpin (Philadelphia, Pa.). From there, it was all Pride, as the maroon and white would finish the half on a 12-0 run. Starting the run was a goal from Camryn Field (Walpole, Mass.) at the 25:01 mark, which was assisted by Anjelia Altebrando (Miller Place, N.Y.), before Katie Stallone (Seaford, N.Y.) and Martel scored back-to-back goals just 1:03 apart to make it 4-1.
Fogg tucked home an unassisted goal at the 19:37 mark to keep the Pride on pace, before Sarnacki buried her second and third goals of the contest to make it 7-1 with 15:56 on the clock. Martel, Field and Stallone all then added their second goals of the contest in a stretch of 2:02 to push the Pride's lead to 10, before Katie Campbell (Somers, N.Y.) scored her first of the contest at the 3:38 mark.
Sophomore Hannah Calabrese (Enfield, Conn.) finished off the first-half scoring as she took a feed from Jamie Jutras (Litchfield, N.H.) and found the back of the net to give Springfield College a 13-1 cushion at the break.
Opening the second half, the Pride continued to pour it on as Fogg scored on an assist from Sarnacki just 1:39 into the frame, before Sarnacki scored consecutive goals to push her total to five, giving the maroon and white a 16-1 lead with 23:56 to play. Campbell would then add her second of the game, which was followed by a goal from Bianca Dos Santos (Danbury, Conn.), before Michala Niden (Walpole, Mass.) found the back of the net for the first time this season to finish off the dominant offensive performance from the Pride.
Next, Springfield College will have the whole week to prepare for its final contest of the regular season, as the Pride will host Emerson on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. on Stagg Field.
