Wrestling Bests North Central, Falls To No. 3 Augsburg and TCNJ at NWCA National Duals

Fort Wayne, Ind. - January 5, 2017 - The Springfield College wrestling program competed against some of the nation's  best at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals in the War Memorial Colesium on Thursday.

Springfield earned its 999th dual win in program history with a 23-22 victory over North Central before dropping a 38-11 decision to Augsburg, third-ranked team in the nation.  In its third and final dual, the Pride's rally fell short with a 22-18 setback to TCNJ.

In its opening bout against North Central, the Pride needed late heroics from Hunter Ayen (Governour, N.Y.) and Joseph Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) to rally for a 23-22 victory.  Ian Tolotti (Dumont, N.J.) produced the Pride's first win of the day at 133 with a 9-0 major decision, and Zach Joseph (Clifton Park, N.Y.) added an 11-1 major decision of his own at 157 as Springfield found itself trailing 13-8 midway through the dual. A hard-fought 5-2 victory by Elias Kokalis (Great Neck, N.Y.) at 165 drew the Pride within 13-11, only to have North Central win at 174 and deliver a pin at 184 to earn a 22-11 advantage.  However, in his first match of the season, Ayen recorded a first-period pin at 1:51 and Fusco put the exclamation point on the comeback win a pin at 4:48 to lead the Pride to the triumph.

Going up against Augsburg, who was ranked third in the latest NWCA National Rankings, Springfield lost the first four bouts before Joseph put together a dominating 10-2 major decision over Grant Parker, who was ranked in third in the nation at 157.  Geovanni Medina (New Britain, Conn.) used a late surge to win 8-6 in overtime at 174, while Ayen posted the Pride's other victory with a 13-0 major decision at 197 as the Pride eventually dropped the match by a score of 38-11.

In their third dual of the day against TCNJ, the Pride won five of the 10 bouts but was pinned twice in what proved to be the difference.  Andrew Mastrangelo (Coplay, Pa.) posted an upset victory at 141 when he knocked off the nation's sixth-ranked wrestler, Anthony Gagliano, by a 6-2 decision before Joseph added a 10-3 decision at 157 for his third win of the day.  Medina grinded out a 4-2 victory at 174, while Ayen added his second first-period pin of the day in just 1:05. In the final bout of the day, Fusco prevailed at 285 by a 5-3 score as the Pride fell short at 22-18.

Springfield College will look to join Iowa State, Oklahoma State, and Oregon State as the only intercollegiate wrestling programs to register 1,000 dual meet victories when it competes at the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming College on January 13-14
