Wrestling In Second After Opening Day of Ithaca Invitational

Providence, R.I. - November 3, 2017 - The Springfield College wrestling team opened up the 2017-18 campaign competing in the Ithaca Invitational, which was hosted in the Providence Career and Tech Center on Friday.

As a team, the Pride totaled 67 points and sits in second among the 16-team field.  Johnson & Wales leads the competition with 88.5 points, while Ithaca is a close third behing Springfield with 66 points. 

In his first collegiate action, Logan Fox (Robbinsville, N.J.) produced two major decisions at 125 to earn a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals, while at 133 pounds, Nicholas DeRosa (Billerica, Mass.) wrestled a pair of smart matches that resulted in the two wins by decision. Additionally, Kearney Gutierrez (Freeport, N.Y.) registered consecutive major decisions to begin his season at 157. 

At 174, Ryan Harty (Plymouth, Mass.) used a win by decision and technical fall to punch a spot in the quarters, and Joseph Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) delivered a win by decision and a late pin en route to reaching the quarters at 285.  The Pride's Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) also impressed in his first collegiate action as he went 3-1, including back-to-back victories by major decision to conclude the first day.
