Williamstown, Mass. - January 6, 2018 - The Springfield College wrestling team competed for the first time in 2018 at the Williams Open on Saturday afternoon.
Springfield's Patrick Ferzoco (Stoughton, Mass.) was the top seed at 141 pounds and finishes as the runner up in the competition. The junior bested Alex Starr from WNE by a 5-2 decision to start off the day before posting a 17-2 technical fall versus Ethan Ives of Castleton. In the semifinals, Ferzoco defeated teammate Norberto Torres Jr. (Perth Amboy, N.J.), 8-3, but was pinned in 1:44 in the championship by Anthony Duco from NAPS. At the same weight class, Bryce Finnegan (Northborough, Mass.) rebounded from an opening round loss to string together four-straight victories to place third overall, while Torres Jr. took fourth.
The Pride's Nicholas Almonte (Cranston, R.I.) also finished second at 165 pounds. The sophomore began the day with a 14-3 major decision over Tom Hamel from Plymouth State and then knocked off Josh Goldberg from NAPS by a 3-2 decision to reach the title bout. In the finals, Hampton Boyd from NAPS prevailed by an 8-2 decision over Almonte. Additionally, Nicholas DeRosa (Billerica, Mass.) had a pair of victories by pinfall en route to taking third at 133 pounds.
Springfield will return to competition on January 12 and 13 when it heads to Pennsylvania to compete in the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College.
