Springfield, Mass. - October 8, 2016 - Three second-half goals helped the Springfield College women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, the Pride has now won its last two games and is 6-3-2 overall with a 2-1-2 record in conference play. With the loss, Wheaton is 9-4 on the year and 1-3 in the NEWMAC. Springfield College held a 22-10 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, while each side had a pair of corner kicks.
In net for the Pride, junior goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) notched seven saves on the afternoon, while for the Lyons, Leann Wolf (Santa Maria, Calif.) earned the start and made three saves in the loss, while Alexa Barbagallo (Bridgewater, N.J.) came on for the final 11:50 and made a pair of stops.
After a scoreless first half, Springfield College got on the board when Dakota Kelly (Bethany, Conn.) got fouled just outside the box, before senior defender Elizabeth Monsen (Wayne, N.J.) stepped up and drilled a direct free kick off the cross bar and into the back of the net to make it 1-0, Springfield College, with 30:55 to play in the game.
Just 11:35 later, the Pride added to its lead when Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) made a great run at the goal, and fired a shot past Wolf from the top of the box to make it 2-0, before freshman Mackenzie Luiz (Newington, Conn.) set up Amanda Wright (Pittsfield, Mass.) for the Pride's third goal of the contest, sealing the win.
Luiz gained possession of the ball just outside the box and carried the ball to the left side of the cage before ripping a shot on net, which was originally saved, but Wright won the race to the loose ball and knocked it into the back of the net to make it 3-0, with 11:50 to play.
