Springfield, Mass. - April 10, 2018 - The Springfield College women's tennis team dropped a tight decision with Mount Holyoke, 5-4, in New England Women's and Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday evening in the Springfield College Field House.
With the loss, the Pride is now 6-5 overall and 1-3 in league play, while the Lyons improve to 6-8 on the year with a 3-1 record against NEWMAC opponents.
Opening the match with doubles play, Springfield College received a 9-7 victory at the No. 3 slot, as Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.) and Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) defeated Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore.) and Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M.), 9-7, but the Pride entered singles play trailing in the match, 2-1.
Junior Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) was impressive in the No. 2 singles slot as she defeated Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India), 6-1, 6-3, avenging a 6-2, 6-1 loss against Tibrewal last season.
Heading into the final three matches trailing 4-2, Springfield College received a win from Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) at the No. 5 slot, as the junior defeated Rosen, 6-1, 6-1, and Ahlmeyer at the No. 6 slot, edging Clara Wang (Madison, Conn.), 6-3, 0-6, 6-4, but was unable to come up with the third victory to clinch the match.
Next up, Springfield College will return to the Appleton Courts on Saturday, April 14, as the Pride hosts Wellesley at 12 p.m.
