South Hadley, Mass. - October 15, 2018 - Several members of the Springfield College women's tennis team competed in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), which was hosted on the campuses of Mount Holyoke College and Smith College over the weekend.
Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) competed in the "A" draw and fell to the eventual champion duo of Bukzin/Evans from Amherst, 3-0, before dropping a 3-0 decision to Babson's Merz/Madison.
Amanda Hill (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) were edged in their opener of the "C" draw by Gordon's Kwok/Maddex, 3-0, however, the duo bounced back with a strong showing against Babson's Blizard/Kaden, winning by a 2-1 margin. The Pride battled to an 8-7 (7-5) win in doubles play and Etter clinched the win with an 8-4 singles victory. In their next match, Western New England's LaPress/Schrader prevailed by a 2-1 decision, despite Etter earning an 8-1 win in singles play.
Cara Freedman (Richmond, Mass.) and Hailey Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.) began their competition in the "C" draw with a 2-1 victory against Mount Holyoke's Li/Marian. The Pride captured the doubles point with an 8-2 win and Freedman cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win. However, Gordon's Hanson/Brucker delivered a 3-0 decision over Springfield in the next round.
In the "D" draw, Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.) got off to a great start with a 3-0 victory against Colby-Sawyer's team of Lopes/Eid. The Pride picked up an 8-6 win in doubles before Malz delivered a 6-2, 6-2 win and Piazza battled to a 6-7(8-6), 6-1, (10-7) victory. However, the Pride bowed out of the tournament after Trinity's Walker/Nolan earned a 3-0 win.
