Lake Nona, Fla. - March 20, 2019 - The Springfield College women's tennis team was edged by New Paltz, 5-4, at the USTA National Campus on Wednesday in a match that needed to be resumed following rain on Tuesday night.
The loss was Springfield's first of the season as it fell to 5-1 on the year.
Springfield won two of the three doubles points as Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) and Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 2 and Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) posted an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Etter then picked up Springfield's first win in singles play at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph, and Malz delivered a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4 as the Pride owned a 4-3 advantage over the Hawks. After New Paltz picked up a win at No. 1 singles to even the match at 4-4, heavy rain in the area postponed the match to Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks would eventually prevail at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 6-2, on Wednesday to clinch the victory.
Springfield will wrap up their time in Florida on Thursday when it clashes with Wisconsin Superior at 6:30 pm.
