Lake Nona, Fla. - March 20, 2019 - The Springfield College women's tennis team earned its fifth-consecutive victory to begin the season as it handled Hamline, 7-2, at the USTA National Campus on Wednesday afternoon.
This marks the first time in Division III program history, dating back to 1995, that Springfield has won its first five matches of the season.
Springfield continued to impress in doubles play as they once again earned two of the three points to gain early momentum in the match. Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) registered an 8-3 win at No. 3 and were first off the courts before Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) and Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) later followed with an 8-6 win at No. 2.
Freadman was dominant in singles play at the No. 2 spot, posting a 6-1, 6-0 win and Etter added a victory at No. 3 by the identical set scores. Maltz clinched the match at No. 4 after picking up a 6-3, 6-0 win and Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.) added a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6. Ahlmeyer put the exclamation point on the day with a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 5.
Springfield will conclude their time in Florida on Thursday when it battle Wisconsin Superior at 6:30 pm.
