Women's Tennis Shuts Down Clark, 9-0, To Capture Most Conference Wins Since 2003-04

Springfield, Mass. - April 23, 2019 - The Springfield College women's tennis team concluded the regular season on Tuesday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown and cruised past visiting Clark University, 9-0, on Appleton Courts. 

Springfield improved to 11-5 and 4-4 in conference play, marking the first time that the Pride has won four conference matches since the 2004-04 season.  The Pride will enter the NEWMAC Championship this weekend as the No. 6 seed and head on the road to face No. 3 Wellesley on Saturday.  

The No. 3 team of Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) opened the match with an 8-3 win, before Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) coasted to an 8-3 victory at No. 2.  The Pride's top doubles team of Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.) earned an 8-4 win to give the host a 3-0 lead.

Malz was the first off the court in singles after a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 and Parrish followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 to clinch the victory.  Ahlmeyer then was victorious, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5, and Freadman eased her way to a 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 position. Piazza tacked on a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 and Etter completed the 9-0 thanks to her 6-3, 6-0 triumph at No. 3. 

The NEWMAC Championship Quarterfinals will begin on Saturday at Wellesley, with the first serve coming at 12 pm.
