Wellesley Upends Women's Tennis, 5-0, In NEWMAC Championship Quarterfinals

Wellesley, Mass. - April 27, 2019 - Despite a valiant effort, the Springfield College women's tennis team was downed by host Wellesley, 5-0, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon in the at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

With the victory, the third-seeded Blue improves to 13-8 overall, while sixth-seeded Springfield concludes the season with a final record of 11-6. 

Wellesley's top doubles pairing of junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and first year Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) defeated Springfield senior Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.), 8-2, to put the Blue up 1-0. In the No. 2 doubles slot, Blue senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) downed Springfield first years Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) and first year Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.), 8-0, while an 8-3 Wellesley win by first year Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) over junior Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) and senior Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) completed the doubles sweep for the Blue.

Leading 3-0 heading into singles, Peng put the Blue within a point of the victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. However, the Pride extended the match with both Parrish and Freadman rallying for set victories at No. 1 and No. 3. After Huang took a 6-2 win in the first set at No. 1, Parrish extended the match to a third set with a 6-3 win in the second. Freadman opened with a 6-4 win over Markwart at No. 3 and was leading 3-2 in the second set at the time the match concluded. With Markwart trailing Freadman and Huang and Parrish locked in a 3-3 third set, Shen clinched the match for the Blue with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Malz at No. 4 singles.
