Colorado Springs, Colo. - September 9, 2016 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team opened up the first day of Colorado College Invitational with a three-set sweep of Whitman before falling in four sets to Colorado College.
In their opener, the Pride defeated Whitman by the set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-19 before squaring off with the host Tigers, which entered the match ranked fifth in the country in the latest AVCA National Coaches Poll. Springfield was able to take a set off Colorado College, but ultimately fell by the set scores of 25-14, 25-18, 22-25, 25-13. Today marked the first time that Springfield College team has competed as a Division III institution in the state of Colorado.
Against Whitman, Lauren Holt (Granby, Conn.), who was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Volleyball Defensive Athlete of the Week this past Monday, led the charge with eight blocks, six kills, and three aces. Anagabrielle Sanchez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) led all players with 15 digs, while Jennifer Hurwitz (Longmeadow, Mass.) racked up a match-best nine kills at a .320 clip to go along with nine digs.
In the nightcap, Holt had 10 kills and five blocks, while Kayleigh Helgesen (Oceanside, Calif.) added 10 kills. Marnae Mawdsley (Bolton, Conn.) stuff the stat sheet with 24 assists and 15 digs, while Sanchez was credited with 14 digs of her own.
Springfield will return to action against Occidental and nationally-ranked Texas-Dallas on Saturday.
