Boston, Mass. - September 26, 2016 - Springfield College's Hayley Kmetz (Ardsley, N.Y.) and Anagabrielle Sanchez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) were recognized for their outstanding play last week by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Kmetz was named the NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week, while Sanchez was tabbed the NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Last week, the Pride picked up three NEWMAC victories in a five-day span, with three-set sweeps over two-time defending champion Babson, Smith, and Emerson, to improve to 10-3, 3-1 in conference play.
Kmetz had a breakout week for Springfield as in nine sets played, the sophomore totaled 29 kills at a .349 hitting percentage to go along with 19 digs, four aces, and three blocks. The Elementary/Special Education major opened the week with a career-best 13 kills and six digs in a sweep of Babson, while two days later, Kmetz posted a career-high nine digs while adding seven kills and two digs in a win at Smith. On Saturday, Kmetz racked up nine kills at a .500 clip and chipped in four digs and a career-best two aces versus Emerson.
Sanchez had a dynamic week defensively as she totaled 53 digs, averaging an impressive 5.89 per set. In a 3-0 win over Babson, Sanchez was dominant with 17 digs, including an incredible 13 in the opening set. On Thursday, Sanchez turned in 21 digs in just three sets before posting 15 digs to go along with a pair of aces in a sweep of Emerson.
Springfield will return to NEWMAC play on Tuesday for its lone match of the week when it travels to face Wheaton.
