Springfield, Mass. - September 2, 2017 - The Springfield College women's volleyball program picked up wins over Endicott and Rivier on Saturday to capture the 2017 Springfield College Invitational in Blake Arena. The Pride improved to 4-0 and was paced by the play of Hayley Kmetz (Ardsley, N.Y.), who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the weekend and was joined by Anagabrielle Sanchez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) on the all-tournament team.
In its first match of the day against Endicott, which proved to be a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III Championship First Round meeting, Springfield prevailed by the set scores of 23-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-17. Kmetz was dynamic with 15 kills at a .389 clip, while Kayleigh Helgesen (Oceanside, Calif.) contributed 14 kills and three blocks. Jen Donnelly (Exeter, R.I.) stuffed her stat sheet with a career-best 24 digs to go along with 13 kills and Sanchez totaled 31 digs of her own. Daniela Detore (Lake Grove, N.Y.) had 33 assists and five aces and teammate Kayley Cimino (Cumberland, Maine) handed out 20 assists as the Pride hit .225 in the win.
In the championship match, Springfield hit at a .412 percentage as a team, totaling just five attack errors in the match, as it bested Rivier by the scores of 25-13, 25-12, 25-12. Donnelly led all players with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Sanchez totaled a match-best 17 digs. Cimino and Detore combined for 33 assists, with Detore registering five of Springfield's 15 service aces in the contest. Bridget Walsh (Garrison, N.Y.) added six kills on 10 errorless attempts to go along with three blocks in the middle.
Springfield will return to action on Wednesday evening when it hosts Amherst at 7 pm.
