Women's Cross Country Takes Fourth at Smith Invitational

Northampton, Mass. - September 10, 2016 - The Springfield College women's cross country team kicked off the 2016 campaign at the Smith College Invitational on Saturday afternoon, finishing fourth out of a 10-team field.   

Today's competition marked the first under the direction of Springfield College's Director of Cross Country and Track & Field, Angelo Posillico, and Head Cross Country Coach, Anna Steinman.

Coast Guard won the team competition after totaling 43 points, while Smith (89), Franklin Pierce (96), Springfield (114), and Clark (121) rounded out the top five.  St. Anselm (136), Mount Holyoke (171), Babson (207), Western New England (218), and Hampshire (234) wrapped up the teams in the field.

In her first collegiate race, Laura Volan (Scarborough, Maine) was Springfield's top finisher as she completed the 5k course in 21:15.65 to finish 10th overall.  Marie Harrington (Limerick, Maine) ran a 21:49.01 to finish 19th, and Sarah Skillin (Fall River, Mass.) placed right behind her in 20th with a 21:53.60. 

Kristen Madeia (Berlin, Conn.) recorded a time of 22:16.11 to take 28th, and the Pride's Rachael Seymour (Red Hook, N.Y.) rounded out the top five with a 22:28.35 for 37th.

The Pride will race again Saturday, Sept. 17th at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
