Women's Cross Country Races Among Nation's Best at Purple Valley Classic

Williamstown, Mass. - September 23, 2017 - The Springfield College women's cross country braved the heat and raced at the Purple Valley Classic, a 6k course hosted by Williams College at Mount Greylock High School on Saturday afternoon. The meet featured nine teams that are currently in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III National Rankings, as out of the teams that finished in the top 10, six were among the nation's best.

The Pride was led by standout junior Kristen Madeia (Berlin, Conn.), who finished the race with a personal-best time of 24:50.1. Madeia, who beat her previous personal record by 28 seconds, was the Pride's top finisher, as she was closely followed by freshman Rachel Wentnick (Metuchen, N.J.), who crossed the finish line in 25:32.7. Next for Springfield College was Hannah Wunderlich (Methuen, Mass.), who clocked in a 26:11.2, while the Pride's top five was closed out by Deanna Carlone (Canastota, N.Y.), who finished in 26:14.1 and Laura Volan (Scarborough, Maine) with a time of 26:19.6. 

Wrapping up the Pride's day was Abigail Murdock (Westerly, R.I.) with a time of 26:41.5 and Macayla LaChance (Peabody, Mass.) with a time of 27:06.7.

Next up, Springfield College will prepare for the Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University on Friday, September 29.
