Boston, Mass. - October 29, 2017 - Standout junior Kristen Madeia (Berlin, Conn.) was the Pride's top runner of the day as the Springfield College women's cross country team took seventh overall at the 2017 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, hosted at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Sunday afternoon.
The Pride, which totaled 165 points in the race and had its best team finish since 2014, trailed MIT, which took first, followed by WPI, Coast Guard, Wellesley, Smith and Wheaton College.
After jumping out to an early lead in the competition, Madeia finished 19th overall with a time of 19:22 on the 5k course, while she was closely followed by Hannah Wunderlich (Methuen, Mass.), who took 35th overall with a time of 20:10. Racing in her first NEWMAC Championship race, freshman Rachel Wentnick (Metuchen, N.J.) was the Pride's third-best runner on the afternoon, as she finished with a time of 20:13, while sophomore Laura Volan (Scarborough, Maine) was not far behind, as she finished with a time of 20:28.
Rounding out Springfield College's top five was Abigail Murdock (Westerly, R.I.), who crossed the finish line in 20:45, just in front of a group of Emily Giardino (Bellingham, Mass.), who posted a time of 21:15, Julia Maturo (Seymour, Conn.), who notched a time of 21:23 and Deanna Carlone (Canastota, N.Y.), who finished with a time of 21:24.
Springfield College will next compete at the NCAA Division III Regional Championships, which will be hosted at Gorham Country Club just outside of Portland, Maine on Saturday, November 11.
