Corletta Powers Baseball Past SUNY-Brockport, 7-4

Phoenix, Ariz. – March 19, 2009 – The Springfield College baseball team jumped out to an early lead and tallied two runs in the eighth inning to down SUNY-Brockport, 7-4, on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Mike Corletta swung the bat well for the Pride as he went 3-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.

With the win, Springfield stands a 3-4 on the season.

The Pride opened the game off with scoring a run with two outs as SC strung together three-straight singles. After Zach Carhart and Travis Turgeon each recorded base hits, Jamie Mackie singled in Carhart to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.

Springfield then opened up a 4-0 advantage after scoring three runs in the second inning. After Mike Robilotto and Joe Kropa reached base on singles, Corletta doubled to left field to drive in a pair. Carhart added an RBI sac-fly to plate Corletta later in the inning as the Pride held a four-run advantage.

A Brockport solo home run in the bottom half of the second made it a 4-1 ball game and the Eagles then tallied two more runs in the bottom of the third to get within one at 4-3. In the third inning, Brockport opened with back-to-back singles and scored their first run of the frame after a Springfield error. An unassisted putout allowed another Eagle run to score as the Springfield lead shrunk to one.

The Eagles eventually tied the game fourth inning as it used a double down the right field line by Mike Goldstein to plate teammate Brent Nicholson who led off the inning with a walk.

However, after letting early leads slip away the last few games, the Pride hung tough, scoring the games final three runs en route to the 7-4 victory.

Springfield scored what would prove to be the game-winning run in the sixth as the Pride used three singles to start the inning to manufacture the run. Robilotto started it off with a single up the middle, followed by Kropa’s single to left. Corletta drove in Robilotto for his third RBI of the game as he singled one back up the middle.

The Pride tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth as Drew Michael and Turgeon each had RBI doubles.

Ryan White chalked up the win on the mound for SC as he threw six innings, allowing four runs, two earned, off eight hits, while striking out five. Mario Piscitelli picked up another save as he tossed 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
