Brandeis Sweeps Baseball in Non-Conference Doubleheader

Waltham, Mass. – March 28, 2009 – The Springfield College baseball team dropped a pair of games at Brandeis on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.

The Judges won the first game, 6-2, and followed it up with a 5-3 victory over the Pride. With the two victories Brandeis improve to 10-9 on the year, while Springfield falls to 3-12.

Springfield jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first as Joe Kropa cracked a solo home run to left center field in the first inning. The Pride’s offense then struggled to score as Pat Nicholson allowed only two run on five hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Nicholson gave up a double to junior Travis Turgeon in the second inning but after that went on to retire nine straight Springfield batters and collect his fourth win of the season. A Zach Carhart RBI groundout in the sixth brought in Mike Corletta, but a three-run sixth for the Judges closed the door on the Pride.

Nick Saviano took the loss in the opener as he allowed six runs, five of which were earned, off five hits while striking out four in 5 2/3 innings of work.

In the second game, Mike Palumbo shouldered the loss in his first collegiate action as he lasted three innings, allowing four earned runs off four hits.

The Pride once again scored in the first inning as a Turgeon infield single scored Corletta to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. However, Springfield could only muster three more hits the rest of the game as it dropped a 5-3 contest. Springfield also scored a run in the fourth and the sixth as Mike Robilotto drove in Turgeon and Karl Quist doubled in Jamie Mackie.

Springfield looks to snap its eight-game losing streak as it travels to take on local-rival WNEC on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
